Outside of traditional public high schools are a variety of private options that focus on the arts, sciences, military life or religious studies. Once an area of interest is established, parents can choose from online courses, standard day classes or an independent learning environment.

Typical costs:

  • The National Education Association offers a guide to online high schools. Courses cost about $102 -$275 each. A bonus is that there are no book fees when the material is available online.
  • The National Association of Independent Schools, which represents about 1,300 nonsectarian and religious schools, lists average private high school costs at $17,555 during 2006-2007. Four schools tip the scales as most expensive at more than $32,000 a year, according to Forbes.com.The average tuition at Catholic high schools nationwide was $6,906 during 2006-2007, according to the annual statistic report by the National Catholic Education Association. In Los Angeles parochial high schools, the rates range $5,000 -$9,700.
  • Diplomas may also be earned through local independent study high schools that offer a combination of one-on-one tutoring and at-home work. In California, one grade level comprised of four courses and two electives runs about $9,000 -$10,000.
Additional costs:
  • Fees include enrollment $500 -$1,000, bus transportation $800 -$1,500, parking $80, PE uniforms around $25, and school uniforms $150 -$300.
  • Books can run $500 -$600 per year.
  • Some high schools offer boarding, which can run about $10,000 above the cost of tuition.
Discounts:
  • Some schools discount tuition if the entire academic year is paid upfront, rather than in installments.
  • Schools generally offer a discount if there are multiple children from the same family in attendance or offer scholarships and tuition assistance packages.
