Personal trainers can provide one-on-one expert advice on how to get fit. Many large-chain fitness clubs and smaller gyms employ trainers, but private trainers are also available to visit your home or office.

Personal trainers should be certified by a fitness school or physical training association. The National Board of Fitness Educators (NFBE) maintains a list of reputable certification programs.

Typical costs:
  • According to Dr. Sal Arria, president of NBFE, the average hourly rate for a trainer is $60-$70 per session. However, trainers can charge as low as $25 per hour, while some high-powered trainers earn as much as $15,000 for a six-week session, depending on geographical location and their experience.
  • Where you live greatly affects what trainers charge. Rates are lower in small towns and higher in urban areas, according to A Healthy Me!, a lifestyle guide from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
  • There typically is little cost difference between using a trainer at a gym and paying a private trainer to come to you, according to Dr. Arria. Plus, private trainers often bring their own equipment or show you how to maximize yours.
What should be included:
  • Trainers should begin the first session by asking what you hope to accomplish, according to The Fitness Almanac. They should inquire about your overall health, including specific problems - such as cardiovascular conditions, mobility limitations or past injuries - that might prevent you from performing certain exercises.
  • Muscle building and toning sessions usually will include working with free weights, weight machines or weighted balls to gradually increase the body's core strength, as well as the strength of specific muscle groups, such as the arms, legs and back.
  • Weight loss training is likely to focus on cardiovascular exercise offered by treadmills, low-impact elliptical machines or stationary bicycles, with an additional emphasis on diet. Some trainers also encourage clients to keep a fitness journal.
Discounts:
  • Online Personal Training Services cost a fraction of what in-person trainers cost. Gym America offers interactive workout and diet regimens for $7 per month or $50 for six months.
  • Fitness centers typically offer discounts if clients buy multiple training sessions or sign up for a new membership.
  • Because some people have greater success exercising together, trainers sometimes offer discounts to two or more clients for circuit training, a combination of cardiovascular and endurance building, according to Dr. Arria.

Extrememly knowledgable and very dtraight forward. I git the feeling that he was thinking the entire time, and I consider that a bargain; having worked with much more expensive trainers with far less results in far more time. Can't say enough about how he helped me!

I moved to RI from NYC and didn't think I could find anything like the calibre of training and facilities I had there. But Amahl showed me wrong. His private studio is stunning--straight out of SoHo--and he's an extraordinary trainer. I trainde with some of his other staff too and they all exhibit tremendous attention to their clients, are extremely knowledgeable, and really fun to work with. can't recommend enough!

Gym: Fitness 31 On The MoveTrainer: Rob Thompson
Type of Session: circuit/functional/sports specific
I have had the pleasure of training with Rob since Febuary of 07. I never had formal fitness training before and i was skeptical at first, but after just one session with Rob my attitude changed. Rob knows how to make the exercises fun. He gives me words of encouragement when I need it, and he holds me accountable when I fail. Rob also likes suprise me with something new at every session. It is never boring, we laugh and have fun. I can't wait till our next session. I have also noticed how other people around Rob receive him. He is admired, friendly, fun loving people person. He is always polite and respectful. I strongly recommend him and am sure you will be more than satisfied with his performance.

Gym: Results Plus Personal TrainingTrainer: Dave Parise
Type of Session: Funtional Training
I watched Dave Parise on a fitness show and was impressed with his knowledge and expert advice. My first experience was with his assessment, nutrition seminars, and instuctional lessons. I found learning every aspect leading up to my goal before actually exercising was educational and exceeded my expectations! I now have a better understanding of control and awarness as he takes me through his movements. Dave was born to be a trainer, motivator, and teacher. I recomend Dave Parise to only the serious people who really demend the best at any level or cost. I always say 'just get me to my goal" regardless!Dave has done just as I asked.
