Would you like to smoke some Peyton Manning? Or, would you prefer to spark up some Girl Scout Cookies? Marijuana growers and venders are getting creative with the highly recognizable names they give different strains of weed, without the permission of the people who own those names. Even President Obama has a strain named after him. The Denver Broncos starting quarterback Peyton Manning was not very happy about two Colorado strains of marijuana being named after him and his brother: The strains are called Peyton Manning and Eli Manning, reportedly from related seeds. The brothers are threatening to take legal action if medical marijuana dispensaries in Colorado do not stop selling the Manning buds. In California, the most popular strain of the year is Girl Scout Cookies. It's won awards at Los Angeles and Denver Cannabis Cup events. (The strain reportedly has a slight minty flavor, much like the popular Thin Mint cookies). The Girl Scout Cookies strain is so popular and in such high demand, there are reports of a pound of marijuana selling for $5,000, about double the average price for medical marijuana. Currently, dozens of dispensaries nationwide are selling the strain, according to Weedmaps, a website that publishes dispensary menus. In California alone, there are more than 50 Girl Scout Cookies vendors. But Girl Scouts of America are a trademarked name. And while the Manning brothers are threatening legal action, the Girl Scouts are not even talking about it. In fact, the Central Coast branch's Tammy Gentry said it was news to her that the Girl Scout Cookies marijuana strain even exists. And a spokesman for the national organization declined to comment. Marijuana growers and venders are cashing in on the popularity of Girl Scout Cookies, a century-old brand. But don't expect to see any door-to-door sales of the marijuana. That's still the territory of the pint-size cookie vendors.
